Another season has come and gone. This year provided its own unique set of challenges. How do you recover from losing a senior class larger than the entire sectional qualifying team used to be not even 6 years ago? It's difficult. Tempers are tested and frustrations boil, and yet, we push on. We perservere. As Eagles we look toward our challenges and overcome them. Situations often dictate their own results, and in spite of some late season mishaps Way-Coh managed a 3rd place finish at Sectionals and was incredibly close to being runner-ups, even in the face of some difficult last minute decisions. I am reminded of an old latin proverb: "Ignus aurum probat, miseria fortes viros," or "Fire tests Gold, Adversity tests strong men." We had some great finishes and amazing races this year and the team is in amazing hands with Trevor Klein, Jake Weiand, Ian Carter and Matt Wilkinson all poised to lead a very fomidable and very young team this year. They begin their own chapter and pick up the story after a great half decade of progress for this incredible program. Good luck to our graduating seniors and to our returning boys, SWIM IN THE OFF SEASON!

February 17th, 2013

Here I sit one year after the last post on this website. A lot has happened in the last 366 days. Young men have put sweat, tears and unparalleled dedication into this season, and it payed off. There have been 54 previous Varsity Swimming seasons in Wayland-Cohocton's School history. Not a single one of them, and perhaps not even all of them combined even come close to the success of this seasons 2012-2013 Team. After a long, and hard fought regular season Wayland-Cohocton has officially won its first ever Section V Class C Championship title. The meet itself was beyond words but i'll try. First off Wayland came out the gates like a bat out of hell, winning the 200 Medley Relay with Dylan Pebbles, Kyle Costello, Nate Stevenson and Kyle Kelley, in dramatic fashion. Nate Stevenson (Fly) and Kyle Kelley (Free) split ridiculous times to come back from 3rd all the way to 1st. The splits were Nate-25.65 (The fastest fly split of any team by nearly a full second) and Kyle-23.02 (The fastest Wayland split on record.) Two events later Donny Martell was behind be nearly 5 full seconds going into the second half. In what amounts to probably the single greatest individual race in the programs history he fought his way back splitting the fastest breaststroke split in Class C by more than 2 second and closing with the ferocity of a "finish-seeking" missile to eventually win the race by a mere .11 seconds. In the 100 Butterfly, Kyle Kelley became a double Sectional Champion as a Sophomore with his almost effortless victory by a margin of 2.30 seconds. The rest of the meet was equally as exciting and incredible with Wayland putting up very good efforts in the 200 Free Relay (4th overall) and 400 Free Relay (3rd overall.) For full results please visit http://section5swim.com/Results/BoysHS/2013/Sec5/C/Meet.htm. I will list the highlights from this season as to type them all out with descriptions would make this entire front page just this one post:
2012-2013 HIGHLIGHTS:
-Final Regular Season Record of 10-1 (.901)
-Only loss to Livonia (by 9 points.) Had we won this meet we would have been LCAA Champions
-Winners of the Section V Fab 4 invitational in Class C
-This was our first invitation to the event in school history
-As a team Wayland-Cohocton outscored EVERY OTHER TEAM except Pittsford
-Wayland-Cohocton were the runner up LCAA Champions (Based on Regular Season Record)
-Wayland's LCAA All-Stars were: Bryce Baird, Donny Martell, Dylan Pebbles and Sean Pebbles.
-Scored 386 points to Livonia's 471 to finish 2nd at the meet
-Winners of the Section V Class C Championship Meet
-First Swimming Sectional Victory in school history
-This victory marked the 100th Career Win for Coach Hughes
         -Program's 2nd Championship title (LCAA Champions 73-74)
-Coach Hughes named Class C Coach of the year (3rd consecutive year of either Class C or LCAA Coaching Award)
-More than 20 Wayland-Cohocton top 5 records broken
         -5 Class C Champions (200 Medley Relay, 200 IM and 100 Butterfly)
         -Victory WITHOUT ANY REPRESENTATIVE DIVERS!!!!!!
         -29 Top 8 Finishers (38 top 16 Finishers)
     -Season Training
-More than 330,000 yards swam (More than 200 miles) IN ONE SEASON
-More than 100 training sessions (Nearly double the number from 2011-2012)
All in all, aside from maybe having beaten Livonia, this season could not have gone more perfectly. I cannot even put into words how proud I am to have been a part of this season. These young men deserve these accolades and the titles they have earned. Good luck to our seniors in the future and to the rest of the team... Get in a pool during the off-season and we'll see you all in 8 months.

February 17th, 2012
First of all, Congratulations to the 2011-2012 team on accomplishing our best finishes in Counties and Sectionals in over 30 years! As well as to Coach Hughes for being named Class C Coach of the year again. Words can't describe how happy and proud I am of what you guys have done this year. So I'll just post the links to the new info here, please explore around I spent the last two days updating things and overhauling most of the site to make it more interesting for you guys, if there's anything you think I should add let me know I'm always open to improvement/correction suggestions!... Again congratulations and I Love You Guys. The Team 11-12, RECORDS!

     MODIFIED RECORDS are now posted.

March 26th, 2011

This last Thursday ended my final modified season as a student coach. I have never been more proud of, honored by and excited for a group of modified kids in my 6 seasons with our modified team. 4 records were broken, including the 200 FR which was a 2:08.07 last year, this year I think the slowest time we went was 2:05. That's incredible. I am sad that I have to leave this program with such an amazing group of kids coming up in the next few years, but at the same time it makes me extremely excited to know that this program is being left in more than capable hands! Good luck to the entire team and especially to Jake Weiand, Kyle Kelley, Kelsey Burke, Dylan Anstee, Katie McAllister, Sam Chizuk and Kyleigh Cotter, you are the future of swimming at Wayland and I am proud to have been friend and coach to you all.

February 13th, 2011

It is over. After 6 years of the most intensive physical strain I've encountered, it's over. Although I'm happy deep down that the sharks, mega-ladders and kick sets are over, I'm also incredibly saddened that this part of my life is over. The last 2 nights were the culmination of over 300 practices, nearly 3/4 of a million yards of training, almost 8 hours of combined competitive swimming time and uncountable more spent generating statistics and being with the team. This year was an absolute masterpiece for this swim team. 12-4 record, beating Avon, having a larger sectional team than the whole teams my freshman and sophomore years combined, breaking over 10 records in 2 meets. But more than everything else this team has accomplished, the most valuable thing we have created is the team itself. The guys who swam on Friday and Saturday night are the personification of what this program has become. I have never been more proud to a part of something in my entire life than this team of swimmers. You're my best friends and I can't even put into words how incredible the last few years have been for me. I still can't believe it's over. I feel like tomorrow im going to go to school get changed put in some lane lines and hear "alright boys do your start and ill see ya in the shallow end." But i'll never hear it again from the same perspective as im used to.
For years Eric, Josh, Justin and I have been working to build a solid base for this program. I finally feel that when we leave at the end of this year this team can go even further than we could ever take it. Butters, Dylan, Sean, KC, Tom, all of them are the new leaders of this team. When coach says "make everyday your masterpiece" listen and do it. My competitive swimming career has been over for less than 24 hours and i already feel like it shouldn't be. I should still have more time to train, get faster, and accomplish all the times and events i feel im capable of. But my time is done. It may seem hard to understand now, and even harder in the middle of a tough set, but if you learn nothing else from me at least understand that what coach says is unforgivably true, "Everything you do matters, Now and Forever."
As hard as swimming is, and as exhausting as all the work can be, I would trade just about anything to be able to stay with this team for the next few years. The other day when we broke the 200 Free Relay record the look on Sean's face was absolutely priceless. To be a part of something as incredible as what this team is, is of is one of the best feelings ive ever felt and im glad that someone who will be here for the next few years got to experience that, and i hope that it only inspires Sean and the rest of you guys to pursue that feeling of accomplishment and pride with the same, if not more, fire than Eric, Josh, Justin and I did.
Incredible season and even more incredible sectional meet guys. Results from sectionals and team stats coming soon. Good Luck to next years team. I Love This Program.

January 29th, 2011

Today was the LCAA Championship Meet. Although not everyone necessarily PRd in all their events there were so many great swims today! Incredible job to everyone who went today. All the times we were on that podium, and how high we usually were on it, shows that this team is not what it used to be.  Congratulations to everyone who placed in the top 16 in any event and if you think you swam well today, you havent seen anything. Wait until Sectionals, the shave and real full out taper works 10x better than the mini one we did this week. Just remember no matter how hard practice gets this week (and it will get extremely difficult) it will all be worth it on Feb. 12th.

January 20th, 2011

Great job tonight to everyone. A LOT! of really good swims. Also i didnt get a chance to talk about senior night yet so let me just say that i appreciate everyones support and am proud of the way this team is performing lately. Everyone has been swimming incredible which is only examples of how well our training is working. As we exit from the regular season i wish all those who are done good luck at next year and to everyone going on to the post season... get ready for the counties and sectionals of this teams life. Lets make the Fab 4 next year and show section 5 that wayland is not what it has been in the past and to watch out in the coming years. Results up soon.

January 17th, 2011

On the eve of my senior night I would just like to share some words with the team on here that i have put down to be read tomorrow at the event.
"After over half a decade of hard work we are finally 'passing the torch.' Especially to this years Juniors and Sophomores, this is YOUR team now. Don't forget what we've already accomplished as a team, but also don't lose sight of what this incredible team is capable of in the next few years. I love this team and all the members of it, and when i come back over the next few years i better see a few more names on those boards! No excuses. No Regrets."
I really can't stress enough how important this sport is to me. But more than that its the team. My best friends and some of the greatest people ive ever met are part of this team and im glad to have been a part of it for as short a period as it's been. I hope the success of this program, and the people in it, continues long after we seniors move on. What we've built over the last 6 years is more than a program, its a family, and it would thoroughly destroy me to see it ripped down just as we finally completed the puzzle. The raw talent and the blood sweat and tears this team puts into everything we do tells me I wont be disappointed. Thank You to all the incredible men that we share this pool with for all the great times over the last few years and more than anything else Thank You to Coach Hughes for accepting us and putting in the time and effort to completely turn around this program while we were here. This year we have beaten teams that 4 years ago we would have said "impossible" and ive had kids and coaches from other teams coem up to me absolutely stunned by the ability and talent our team possesses. We have finally earned the respect  we have been working so hard for. Get ready for the post season boys. CAUSE ITS COMIN'!!!!

January 14th, 2011

Today was not a shark day, however the reason we had practice is a sullen occasion. I think i speak for most of the team when i say that i would rather do 100 sharks on 2 minutes than lose a great teacher like Mr. Mochol. He will always be remembered and i want to personally thank all the members of the team who took the time today to go to calling hours. Im sure it meant a lot not only to the family, but for coach as well. See you all tomorrow for Plyo.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 13th, 2011

Again Wayland proves that this program is not even close to what it was 4 years ago. The races tonight prove that this season is the product of nearly half a decade of hard, lactic acid producing work. Although there were many great swims the Race of the Year thus far goes hands down to Eric Martell who not only won his event against the only opponent to really challenge him all year (not from dansville) but broke not just eh 5th place school record but jumped immediately to 3rd place. Incredible. I am more proud to be a part of this team everyday. And to Livonia, i give those guys a lot of respect, they are similar to bath in my mind as some of the most respectable, friendly kids you could meet. Nice work guys. results up this weekend.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 11th, 2011

Very nice meet bros. Especially in the conditions we swam under. That win was not just for a 4th all-star, that was for Mr. Mochol. and to the Bath swimmers, thanks as well. Again they prove to be one of the most humble and friendly group of kids you could ever meet. Cant wait to see em all at counties. Results up this weekend.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 6th, 2011

Wow. I mean, yes, it wasn't quite the WIN some of us have been working so hard for, but there were so FAST TIMES tonight! Im pretty sure if everyone didnt PR in at least 1 thing, you were within a second. Absolutely incredible meet despite some lack of commitment and effort. Great job to all the swimmers who were there. I cannot wait to post the result of that on the site.

January 4th, 2011

Another great meet guys. Some PRs and some improvements from before the break. Its obvious that the christmas practices did there work. Get ready for a big meet on Thurday!

December 20th, 2010

Again we manage to maintain the streak as we beat Hornell for the 2nd year running. Again, although the times werent exactly as spectacular as they could have been, luck and fate fell in our favor. Nice meet to everyone and enjoy the win, but be prepared for another barn burner with Dansville on Thurs. Results from Avon are up and this along with the tri-meet on thurs should be up probably on sunday after christmas.

December 17th, 2010

I have been to sectionals every year since my freshman year. Been on two Record Breaking Relay teams. Acquired school records in individual event and been to the state meet to watch. However, never in my entire swimming career have i been more proud of a team than this night. Thank you to everyone this was by far the greatest senior gift any of us could have asked for. Although many of the things that happened were sheer twists of fate a win is a win and i am incredibly proud of every member of this team. This is why we train. SHARK DAYS!

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

December 15th, 2010

Although last nights meet was not anything extraordinary as a whole for the team, it was still another W for the team. Way to get the job done. Nice work on Josh McDowell's part as well as he PRd in the fly with a 1:04. Results up this weekend.

December 9th, 2010

Im running out of adjectives guys... Just another great meet for the team. Theres a few things that Josh and I would like to discuss with the team about how the rest of the season is about to go, so we'll talk to coach and try to get at you guys fairly quickly. Great job to the whole team tonight, especially those who stepped up and took on events they've never done before.

December 7th, 2010

Awesome meet again for all of todays swimmers. I know the pool was about 10 degrees hotter than were used to but good job to everyone for not letting it affect us too much. 200 FR record watch out. Again ill post the results this weekend. Nice job and get ready for Thurs. with Canisteo-Greenwood.

December 2nd, 2010

Another absolutely incredible meet for Wayland. As always Dansville was really tough and it came down to that last relay. Even though we lost i know many of us feel the score doesn't reflect the performance of tonights swimmers. All around amazing again. Keep it up. Ill try to post the results this weekend with those from tuesday.

November 30th, 2010

November 9th, 2010

Today was another tough day and noone said it better than Sean Pebbles who said, "If I start to drown... just let me go." Awesome. I think he pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as how we were all feeling. In fact that might make a good season motto. Thanks Sean.

November 8th, 2010

As the season begins today i would just like to open with the thought im sure is on every swimmer who went to practice today's mind, "OW!" There is not a muscle in my body that isnt throbbing and im glad. This season looks to be incredible for our team. I just want to let everyone know that if you ever have any questions ask me, in school, on Facebook, at practice, e-mail ( sully97531@yahoo.com ), text or call ( 585-991-3537 ), for anything. I actually look forward to being available to answer any questions anyone has. Great first day everyone, it only gets harder.

October 26th, 2010

Instead of ordering t-shirts, hoodies and fleeces it has been decided that we will simply order fleeces for all those who wish to buy one. We will hopefully be doing some fundraising to try and get them at as little cost to us as possible. The finalized design is available to see in the pictures section.

LINK TO FLEECES HERE.

October 16th, 2010

For the last week I have been working on a new logo for this year. Although it isn't quite as swim related as id like it to be i still think it looks pretty cool. Let me know what you think. I also designed fleece jackets for the seniors so hopefully we have something nice to take away from the program... other than a few records =).

January 30th, 2010

Today was the LCAA Meet 2010. It was by far one of the best meets this team has seen all year. Sean Pebbles went an insane 1:01 in the 100 free and then turned around to pop a 1:09 in the back!! The entire team did incredibly well and almost everyone dropped time in at least one event! See the results on the County Page.

January 26th, 2010

Today we had a good meet against Campbell-Savona. Some great things happened. Many people had great times and Justin White did amazing in his events not only qualifying for sectionals in the 200 and 500 but also PRing and being one of the Double Winners in individual events at the meet. Great meet. 1/26/10- Campbell-Savona

January 26th, 2010

Last week we had a good meet against our good friends from down the hill Dansville. It was a good meet and a good opportunity to swim competitively with some great friends. Good job to both teams. 1/19/10-Dansville

January 16th, 2010

The other night was a great win for Way-Coh with us beating Letchworth 97-79. A lot of people had some good times and again some stayed steady. Great week of practice for everyone, it was a very hard week but everyone is improving. 1/15/10- Letchworth
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 13th, 2010

Last night was a great meet for some and an average one for others. Some people dropped time, some stayed steady. Either way we did very well against a team that is ranked in the top 4 in Class C and has had previous state qualifiers. Nice Job last night! 1/13/10- Livonia
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 7th, 2010

Today was an amazing day for Wayland swimming! Almost everyone dropped time or had a great race and its now official every single person on the team has scored points for the team! Congrats to Ryan Vogt. All in all one of the best meets of the season although we lost it was the first time we've scored this well against Bath in years and the score was very close going into the 400 FR. Awesome meet to everyone! 1/7/10- Bath
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 7th, 2010

Sorry this one is a little late I've been really busy.... but the other day we had a great meet against York. It was apparent then that the break practices were starting to kick in and it was a very good meet for everyone! Although we lost it was only by 6 points and time wise less than half a second. 1/5/10- York

December 22nd, 2009

Today was another great win for Way-Coh swimming. ESPECIALLY by the rookies!! It's amazing how they pulled off more than 20 PR's in the second half of the meet alone. Great job to everyone.
12/22/09- Geneseo

December 19th, 2009

Last night was a MAJOR victory for the Swim Team! For the first time in 7 years Wayland beat Hornell. Although it may be said that we simply "won by numbers" that shouldnt matter, all that means is that we finally won a meet for the same reason we've been losing them for so long... Numbers. We finally have team volume on our side and its definately helping!! The rest of the season should be very interesting with huge meets coming up vs. Marcus Whitman, York, Bath and Letchworth. Last nights results here- 12/18/09- Hornell
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

December 15th, 2009

Today was another unfortunate loss to defending Sectional Champs for the last 5 years Avon. Although not everyone swam their best times everyone tried and it was a good meet. 12/15/09- Avon

December 10th, 2009

Today we swam against HFL and played with our line-up a bit. I think it was a great success because we got to see what different people could do in different events. We also had Sean Pebbles go 28.82 in a 50 Incredible for a freshman!! Awesome work to everyone. 12/10/09- HFL

This year I went to Australia for 20 days over the summer and actually learned something I think will benfeit the whole team . It's called the RAS and it's one of the major driving forces behind your brain and body's desire and ability to succed. Read more on the RAS on the page The Mental Aspect of Swimming.

This week Coach Hughes took me, Eric, Dan and Kevin to the Adirondacks to climb Mount Marcy as a fundraiser for the Team. Given everything we got to see and do I loved the trip and hope this continues to be a tradition for our team. Read more on Marcy here.
